Job Posting: Trail Surveyor
Term: short term contract, 4 days, 2-3 days on site, 1-2 days reporting
Rate of Pay: $600, 150/day
The West Kootenay EcoSociety is a community based environmental non-profit organization with a focus on transitioning to a locally and regionally sustainable post-carbon society. We are planning a trail restoration project for the Lasca Creek Trail, located in the West Arm Wilderness Park. We are seeking a person to complete a thorough assessment of the trail. The assessment will map what work the trail requires to be restored.
The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated individual with previous trail layout and trail building experience, and practical knowledge of resource management. The candidate will need to produce a report within the four day period that will be used to guide phase two and three of the project. Phase two will see community volunteer participation in restoring the easier parts of the trail with non-mechanized hand tools in the summer/fall of 2010. Phase three, if necessary, will be dedicated to restoring the rest of the trail with workers trained in the use of power tools in the fall of 2010 or the summer of 2011.
Responsibilities:
- 2-3 day backpacking trip into Lasca Creek Trail. The trail is 12-13 km. The hike to the trailhead is an additional 4-5 km.
- Conduct thorough trail assessment and prepare and submit detailed trail map and report based on assessment to be used for phase two and phase three.
- Determine human resources and materials needed to accomplish phases two and three of trail project.
Qualifications:
- Previous trail layout and trail building experience.
- Self-motivated individual with ability to work independently and manage own workload without close supervision.
- Resource management background with working knowledge of erosion and proper drainage values.
- Good navigation skills using a GPS (provided) and ability to work in an outdoor environment exposed to the elements for an extended period of time.
- Report writing and mapping skills.
- Valid drivers license.
- First Aid certification an asset.

Reo's Green Partnership with EcoSociety
Paul Osak of Reo’s has established an ‘EcoSociety Recommended’ video section in his store. The new section will house films consistent with the EcoSociety’s mandate of awareness-raising around issues of conservation, climate change, peak oil, re-localization and transitioning to a post-carbon world.
The EcoSociety celebrates Paul’s interest in ‘green’ and his willingness to set space aside in his business to raise awareness in our community. Please support this important initiative, and ask for the new ‘EcoSociety Recommended’ section when you visit Reo’s. Feedback to the EcoSociety and recommendations for additions to the section are always welcome.
